Treating Problem Implants

We are now seeing that 30 to 40% of dental implants have some degree of bone loss or infection. Implants can sometimes become diseased from poor oral hygiene, implants that cannot be cleaned adequately due to the restoration(s), or compromised general health (e.g., diabetes, decreased or compromised immune system, cancer, connective tissue disorders, etc.).

Sometimes the bone loss results from the attachment screw becoming loose from regular use. If this screw is not tightened in a timely manner, it can fracture, and the implant can become damaged or infected.

Sometimes, these implants can be treated successfully with sophisticated treatments that include Erbium lasers to detoxify the implant surface, ND:YAG lasers to treat the bacterial element and remove any infection, and titanium brushes to deliver antimicrobial agents. Bone grafting with stem cells can be used in selected cases to restore lost bone support and further increase the long-term success.

If you see any redness, swelling, or pus draining around your implant; if the implant or crown feels loose; if you hear a “clicking” noise; or if it hurts when you chew ... do not procrastinate. Call our office and have Dr. Dalessandro examine the area as soon as possible. The sooner you catch the disease process the better, as growing bone back around implants is very difficult. Most of the time, a 3D scan (X-ray) will be taken to see the extent of the problem and then a customized treatment plan can be created specifically for you.
